Theme
The theme of the book "The Red Scarf Girl" can be found at the end of the book. In the epilogue Ji-Li tells us that her goals in life and wishes were unimportant to her now. Her goal to be a Red Guard, to be a perfect student and child of Mao was no longer important to her. She remembers her promise to her mother, father, and grandma saying she would take care of her younger siblings. She knows her family is more important than anything the world can give. Ji-Li knows what is needed of her and her duty. Her courage to turn away from a bright future and sever ties with her black landlord family and face a ugly future like her parents was admirable. In the book you can say that the theme is that in whatever situation you should have the courage to show compassion to your values. In the Cultural Revolution Ji-Li did not have the courage to feel sorry for her parents. It wasn't her parent's fault that they were a landlord family. However through all the mist Ji-Li could only blame her parents and hated them for it.

YES! This is the theme that we discussed for at least an hour, right? :)
I agree with the theme: "In whatever situation, you should have the courage to show compassion to your values."
In some ways, I think that Ji-Li had a lot of courage. I think she had courage because even during the horrible and humiliating times she went through, she didn't stop carrying on with her life. On the other hand, you could say that in other ways, she was a coward. She didn't have courage at all. She couldn't stand up for her family and she even told them that she hated the family she was born in. However, later, she realized that during the Cultural Revolution, everyone had been brainwashed. Later she knew that during that time, her family was actually most important to her.
i think that apart from this theme, there are other themes that can be related to it that comes from the story.
heyyy kelly =)♥
Fabulous job on summarizing about your theme!
Your book has an interesting theme! I think the theme would have approached towards the readers easily, since it’s based upon what we believe in real life. In reality, people plan their future ahead, making goals and wishes, unaware of what would happen next. In your story, it seems like Ji-Li had goals of becoming a Red Guard and perfect student. However, she gives up her goals realizing that her top priority is family. These days, we do not recognize the importance of family, but this book makes us comprehend on what are our true values are. Also, it seems like your book has a similar theme to mine! In my book, villagers learn through the obstacles in the sea and discover what their values are. I believe many stories based upon war and histories have themes related to values. I have realized that theme is significant, as much as the other categories that create a good story. I thought that a theme was unimportant in a story, but now, my thought has changed.
The theme has made me interested and curious about reading it!
Bu Byeee love ya ~
Isn't this the theme we discussed at dinner time?? At that time it wasn't very convincing, but reading this, I'm convinced to read this book.
